Spring Gardening Tips: Compost Tea, Beneficial Insects, and More
April showers may not always be reliable, but they have certainly been good news for spring and summer gardening in Wimberley, Texas! The subsoil moisture stores we accumulate now are important for the long-term health and vitality of our landscapes, including our beloved oak and cedar hills.
The weather has been mild and beautiful, but gardeners should be aware of the conditions that can lead to the development of early blight. This fungal disease is especially common on tomatoes, peppers, and potato plants, and can be treated with fungicides or compost tea.
Speaking of compost tea, it’s a cheap and easy way to provide your plants with a real boost in nutrition while helping them to fight fungal diseases and weather stress. Simply soak well-rotted compost or a high-quality, living commercial compost in water overnight, then strain it into your watering can or sprayer.
As for pests, Japanese beetles, cucumber beetles, mites, aphids, and mealybugs have already begun to appear in gardens. One effective organic solution is Fertilome Triple Action, which can help control these insects. Beneficial nematodes and Nolo Bait are also useful for controlling ants, fleas, ticks, and chiggers.
Don’t forget the rock stars of beneficial insects, ladybugs! They are highly desirable in gardens where aphids are a problem and can be attracted by using a Ladybug house.
